SARNAFIL ROOF KEEPS WATER TREATMENT PLANT DRY

“Dry” and “beautiful” aren’t words normally associated with a water treatment plant. But these words definitely apply when referring to the roof of the Onondaga County Water Treatment Plant in Oswego, New York. The striking, undulating roof mimics the rolling waves of the sea, and the Sarnafil membrane makes sure the new roof is leak-free.

A WATERTIGHT SYSTEM

The water treatment plant, which is located near the shores of Lake Ontario, had seen many roofs come and go since it was built in the 1960s. The EPDM roof on the building most recently had reached the end of its life expectancy, so the Metropolitan Water Board was looking for a new roofing system that offered energy efficiency, durability and low maintenance costs. The Sarnafil roofing system met all these needs.

GOING WITH THE FLOW

The project called for the removal of the old EPDM system down to the concrete and metal decks, then installation of a self-adhered vapor retarder, insulation and the Patina Green Sarnafil G 410 membrane. But Josall Syracuse would quickly face a cascade of challenges. “Installation on the low slope roof areas was fairly standard, but the steep sloped area was another story,” said Nicholas Maselli, owner and project manager at Josall Syracuse.

HIGH AND DRY

Today, the roof is both beautiful and water tight. “Despite constant rain in central New York, the roof is doing great,” Maselli stated. “I would definitely install a Sarnafil system again. It is a great product and easy to work with."
